چکیده

Baer, G., Shamir, G., Sandwell, D., Bock, Y. 2001. Crustal deformation during 6 years spanning the M w = 7.2 1995 Nuweiba earthquake, analyzed by Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar. Isr. J. Earth Sci. 50: 9–22. The November 22, 1995, M w = 7.2 Nuweiba earthquake occurred along one of the left-stepping segments of the Dead Sea Transform in the Gulf of Elat (Aqaba). We examine the surface deformation patterns in the region by Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) for the period 1993 to 1999, which includes the end of one seismic cycle and the beginning of the next. Because the main rupture was under water, ERS coverage is limited to distances of approximately 5 km or more away from the rupture. Pre-earthquake interferograms do not show any detectable deformation along the Gulf. Coseismic interferograms show deformation at distances of up to 50 km from the main rupture, with the highest fringe rate (strain) NW of the rupture termination. Coseismic phase gradient maps show triggered slip along faults parallel to the main rupture (sinistral or normal with the Gulf side down) along the western shore of the Gulf, and in a belt of extensional faults along the eastern shore, striking at angles of about 30° to the major rupture. Postseismic deformation is observed only in a time window of up to 6 months following the mainshock. It was concentrated in the region of the high coseismic strain, and seems to be related to the M L > 4.5 aftershocks in the respective time window.

The 1995 November 22, Mw 7.2 Gulf of Elat earthquake cycle revisited

S U M M A R Y The 1995 November 22, M w = 7.2 Nuweiba earthquake occurred along one of the left-stepping segments of the Dead Sea Transform (DST) in the Gulf of Elat (Aqaba). It was the largest earthquake along the DST in at least 160 yr. The main shock was preceded by earthquake swarms north and south of its NE-striking rupture since the early 1980s, and was followed by about 6 months of inten...

Bam earthquake: Surface deformation mea- surement using radar interferometry

On the 26th December 2003 an earthquake with MW=6.5 shook a large area of the Kerman Province in Iran. The epicenter of the devastating earthquake was located near the city of Bam. This paper described the application of differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (D-INSAR) and ENVISAT ASAR data to map the coseismic surface deformation caused by the Bam earthquake including the interfe...

InSAR measurement of crustal deformation transients during the earthquake preparation processes: a review

Crustal deformation is one of the most important parameters used for the observation and modelling of the seismic cycle of strain accumulation and release. The improvements of satellite Earth observation data and methods over the last two decades, have provided a way to measure crustal movements with good accuracy and spatial coverage. In particular, multi-temporal Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR...

SAR interferometry using ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 data for the Mw 7.8 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2, “DAICHI-2”) has been observing Nepal with the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (PALSAR-2) in response to an emergency request from Sentinel Asia related to the Mw 7.8 Gorkha earthquake on April 25, 2015. PALSAR-2 successfully detected not only avalanches and local crustal displacements but also continental-scale deformation. Es...

Deformation on nearby faults induced by the 1999 Hector Mine earthquake.

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar observations of surface deformation due to the 1999 Hector Mine earthquake reveal motion on several nearby faults of the eastern California shear zone. We document both vertical and horizontal displacements of several millimeters to several centimeters across kilometer-wide zones centered on pre-existing faults. Portions of some faults experienced retrog...
